The Department of Vehicle Licensing (DOVL) has stated that there is no decision to close down number plates production in an attempt to find a new site for the production of number plates. A press release which prompted a clarification following media reports quoting an unidentified official of the Ministry on condition of anonymity indicating that the Ministry was anticipating closing down the number plates production section has left more questions than answers. Because of this, DOVL officer Michael Jones explained the agency never issued a purchase order or signed any contract with a new supplier to manufacture number plates.
The press release noted that the Ministry has taken new measures in the production of number plates and postponing a plan to recycle old number plates that could have the potential save revenue. Jones said the technology to recycle number plates had not been perfected but research has been given a priority.
